If I were an Atheist – I’d be afraid of Home Schooling!

I have been having a short dialog with “onein6billion” on my entry titled “Atheist Scientists in Uproar over Movie Showing…”

My response was long, so I decided to make it a new post.

In you last comment you responded:

“what do you have to fear”

What I fear is that the creationists on the Texas Board of Education will further “water-down” the little bit of evolution that actually does get taught in Texas public high schools.

As Abraham Lincoln said “The philosophy of the classroom today will be the philosophy of government tomorrow. So your fears are justified, if I subscribed to atheistic and darwinian evolution I would be afraid of those rascally Christians teaching theism as well – because in a few generations you would have a lot less atheists in the world!

Your statement presupposes that the battle between Christianity and A-theism starts with winning the hearts and minds of the next generation. However, atheists misunderstand their greatest threat.

Teaching a little theism in the Government controlled schools is not atheists greatest threat. The Government Monopoly on education, within in a few generations will eventually implode, because the seeds of its own demise are built into the philosophy, the methodology and the bureaucracy of the current system.

The utilitarian, cookie cutter, assembly line, one size fits all factory approach to education will continue to churn out multitudes of politically apathetic, ignorant, hedonistic, and lemming like pliable citizens who are ready to believe and accept whatever their messiah (their government task master) tells them. The Government Schools are churning out idiots, just look around! And, with the current over bloated centralized bureaucratic machinery, its system of self protection will only serve to stifle and gum up the necessary means to any “real” change.

In a few generations (if that) the very expensive (in high taxes that is – compared with current private alternatives) government school system as a means to real “education” (which is now more about politically correct indoctrination) will collapse.

Then the only real alternative if parents want “real education” for their children will come from private and religious sources, especially from home schooling. For over 25 years now, the ever increasing Christian home schooling community has been developing (with the use of modern technology and networking) very low cost, cutting-edge world view minded curriculum like (this is just a sample from hundreds of curriculum’s that are being developed) :

This curriculum is being developed with the intent to thoroughly train and disciple the next generation of Christian soldiers. And if you think that this stuff is written by a bunch of hay-seed Christians think again, see a small sample of some of the results here and here.

In a few short generations home schoolers will be the best and the brightest – leaders in every area our culture, and will have been thoroughly inculcated with a biblical world-view rather than an atheistic government educated world-view.

Besides, when the Government Monopoly System eventually collapses all the alternative “educational infrastructure” will be in place. It will take secular atheistic humanists years to catch up (if they ever could) .

Not only that, generally, home schooling families (and serious minded Christians) have high fertility rates and are very unlikely to abort their posterity (their future) unlike secularists, leftists, atheists, and humanists who readily kill off their posterity (their future) by abortion. Many of these home schoolers have very large families, I personally know of many of these families, checkout any home schooling conference or convention. This means they will multiply quickly, within a few generations to raise their children with their convictions! Just like the Hebrews of old did in when they were in bondage in Egypt:

But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
Exodus 1:8

For the sake of argument – this is an general idea of the potential of this movement. Let say a family raises an average of 4 children in every generation (there are many families with 12+) and there are by bests estimates right now 2 million home schoolers:

Today’s Generation: 2 Million
2nd Generation: 8 Million
3rd Generation: 12 Million
4th Generation: 48 Million
5th Generation: 192 Million

This is just a basic illustration to show how potent this movement is. Every day more and more Christian families are pulling their children from the Government Indoctrination Centers (Schools) and using other means (especially the low costing home schooling option) to educate their Children.

The only way to stop us, is to persecute us or try take our children from us – (you’ll probably have kill many of us to do that!) But that won’t work either, because whenever we are persecuted we multiply…

One of our early church fathers Tertullian (160–235 AD) famously said, “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church,” – “kill us, torture us, condemn us, grind us to dust… The oftener we are mown down by you, the more in number we grow; the blood of Christians is seed.”

Case in point is China

By the Power of the Holy Spirit, Christianity will continue to expand throughout the world by Evangelism, Missions, Church Planting and Multi Generational Christian Education, this will continue the massive growth of Kingdom of Jesus Christ!

Remember, God the Father in heaven hears the prayer’s of His people as we continue to pray as Jesus taught us “Thy Kingdom come, “Thy will be done” “on earth” as it is in Heaven”!!!

The Bible speaks prophetically of the dominance of Christianity in this world, an example of this is in Ezekiel 47. In it the Prophet is given a poetic vision of the New Testament Church or the Kingdom of Jesus Christ:

(this “water” is an image of the Holy Spirit of the Kingdom of Christ – flowing from the temple and throne of God in heaven out into the world)

Then he (an Angel) brought me (Ezekiel) back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side. And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits (this is a picture of progressive time) , and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. (there it is! The dominance of His Kingdom)

He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river. When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. (this healing is salvation in Christ!) And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. (this is the remnant of rebels that will be left)

Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. (see Psalm 1) They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”

In his days (Jesus Christ) shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth. They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
Psalm 72:7-9

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 9:6-7

Christianity will come dominate the world, this is not only prophesied in the bible but is known in the academic community as well, see Philip Jenkins scholarly book – The Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity (in it he mainly deals with statistical data and current global trends)

History testifies of this as well – see for yourself:

It boils down to this my friend, atheists can’t stop the Gospel! So why do they waist their time?

Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.” Acts 5:34-39

If I were an unrepentant atheistic sinner – I certainly would be afraid! Repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Turn from your sin and crown Jesus Christ the Lord of your life!

God to is ready to forgive you today!

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him (Jesus Christ) and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2: 9-11

Actually, I typed a sentence similar to this one into Usenet over 15 years ago. But a few generations seems to be 50-70 years, so things have not changed all that much in the last 15. One problem is that the schools are paid for by the affluent and the students come from the non-affluent, so there’s no way that most students can do better than a free education.

“The Government Schools are churning out idiots”

That’s not strictly true. Obviously we have a problem in Texas with many school districts having over 50% Hispanic students. They are lower economic status. In general, they do not have high motivation. But home schooling is not an option. Charter schools are catching on slowly – but charter schools probably won’t teach theism or fail to teach evolution.

“very low cost, cutting-edge world view minded curriculum like”

Yes, this is very frightening. But then when they apply to a real university for a biology or medical discipline, they are faced with rejection, remedial education, and quite possibly shock. One professor recently wrote “I said something about evolution at the start of the semester and a student said something and I said you will not enjoy this course.” After all, evolution is the fundamental principle behind everything in biology. And that is the way biology is taught at a real university. Also it is the way that biology is taught for the Biology AP test (national standards instead of state standards).

So yes, if I hoped that universities would train more Americans in science instead of foreigners and Asian-Americans, I am likely to be disappointed if home schooling increases very much at all.

I can’t make any sense out of the rest of your stuff.

“The Bible speaks prophetically of the dominance of Christianity in this world.”

    Well, dream on, dreamer.

  2. Larry,

    To quote Baxter:

If I should tell a worldling but what the holiness and spiritual joys of the saints on earth are, he cannot know it; for grace cannot be clearly known without grace: how much less could he conceive it, should I tell him of this glory! But to the saints I may be somewhat more encouraged to speak; for grace giveth them a dark knowledge and slight taste of glory (SER, 18).

  3. Amen Dave…

Although sin corrupts our full sight and somewhat darkens even the Christian’s understanding.

Remember that the one-eyed man is king – in the land of the blind!

Thanks be to Jesus Christ for giving sight to blind men!

    More to come tommorow…

  4. onein6billion,

As far as your comment goes “Well, dream on, dreamer.”

Get your proverbial “head out of the sand” and get in touch with reality. Christianity already “is” the dominant religion in the world today!

The last time I checked, 33% if the World’s population profess to believe in some variety of Christianity, see:

After 2000 years, the Global Church has gotten this far, how far do you think we will be in another 2000? Especially as the Church matures…

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

    Matthew 28:19-21

WE are well on our way!

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice:
    “Salvation belongs to our God,
    who sits on the throne,
    and to the Lamb.”

All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:
    Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
    and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.

    Revelation 9:7-11

  5. Today’s newspaper:

The Texas College Coordinating Board is recommending tougher standards for high school students who want to enter the Texas University System schools. Among these tougher standards is a proper understanding of evolution.

So if homeschoolers wish to go to the best state universities, they better learn the right answers, whether they believe them or not.

Quoting scripture in biology class is not going to get you a passing grade.

On the other hand, if you want the country to continue to slide towards third world status, don’t teach any science at all. Why is evolution “singled out” as the science that cannot be taught? Why not astronomy with its obvious “we are seeing light today that left the Andromeda Galaxy 2 million years ago”? How many anti-science YEC Christians does that offend? Why not geology with its “some rocks in Australia are about 4 billion years old”?

  6. NewsFlash:

    The Cato institute reports:

“A growing number of colleges and universities around the United States, including Harvard and Yale, are admitting homeschooled students to their freshman classes. One unusual family, the Colfaxes of Boonville, California, have had three of their four homeschooled sons accepted by Harvard. The Chronicle of Higher Education recently reported a boom in homeschooled students’ winning admission to selective colleges. In the absence of a transcript or high school diploma, applicants can submit samples or a portfolio of their work, letters of recommendation, and CLEP and Stanford Achievement Test scores. The HSLDA’s study of 1,657 homeschooling families notes that homeschooled students want to attend college: 69 percent of respondents pursued a more formal postsecondary education”

Home schoolers continually score well above average on SAT and ACT exams:

So, If they don’t want the best and the brightest and if they outlaw us so what? We’ll just create more of our own, most of all of the universities in this country were started by us anyhow, see:

Besides, there already are many fine “accredited” Christan Colleges and Universities right now.

  7. onein6,

“On the other hand, if you want the country to continue to slide towards third world status”

Pleezze! Christianity raised so much of this world out of her ethical debauchery and paganism. Read the first hand missionary account’s through-out history as to how your forefathers lived.

Un-regenerate humanity can prize its Pyramids and Temples –
(Aztec and Mayan to name a few) but they are all Monuments to “human slavery” and “human sacrifice”.

It has been Jesus Christ who has taught men how to live!

He is the Prince of Peace!

    The hope of the world!

“slide towards third world status” As I said in my last post we built almost all of the institutions of higher learning in this country.

    What a ridiculous charge!

As far as it goes with Christians, didn’t your mother teach you not to believe everything you see on TV?

  8. onein6,

You said “Quoting scripture in biology class is not going to get you a passing grade”

The Bible teaches mainly ethics and very simply tells us who we are how we got here.

I don’t know if you’ve actually read it all the way through from Genesis to Revelation, but it never claims to be an “exhaustive” book on creation, just a “general” book on that subject.

    Christians against Science?

OK, shure – where did you get that assumption from?

We only disbelieve a particular unproven doctrine of origins.
(See my comments on the “black eye” post)

If I want to learn more about an artist I can read his writings, maybe his autobiography and learn very much about him. Christians study the Bible for this purpose to know the mind of God. But we also love to study God’s created order itself to learn more about Him by what He has made! I can tell a lot about an artist by what he has created!

Now sit down and take a breath – you probably find this really hard to believe – but there are, and have been, many scientist’s who are actually Christians, READ history OK.

We have plenty of outstanding science curriculum’s that has been developed by scientists:

Apologia is one of the best, check some out:

As far as it goes with remedial education, Government educated children need the most, I work at a University and my ears are on the ground floor, I hear the complaints of the Professors about how poorly educated many of their government educated students are.

Things have changed in the last 15 years – According this article on the “the no child left behind act” you‘ll find out that 68 percent of fourth graders cannot read proficiently at grade level, 83 percent of twelfth graders are not proficient in math, and that 82 percent of twelfth graders are not proficient in science (Did you read that? HIGH SCHOOL S-E-N-I-O-R-S – 82% SCIENCE – 83% MATH), See: http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/nclb.teachers.admins.pdf

Besides, where are all the lawyers, politicians, artists, filmmakers, journalists, authors, professors, etc, going to come from if they cant read or think? Who do you think will be leading the charge in cultural regeneration? Stop being so narrow in your thinking.

As for what you call “free” education, are not high taxes costs? Think about it, government schools are constantly asking for more and more money and never ever seem to have enough, high taxes are costs, besides with millions of baby boomers moving into retirement, expecting social security money (which is bankrupt) and the high cost of America’s military empire which is in 140+ nations of the world. Where do you expect the money from? Print it? (that worked great in pre-war Germany) Confiscate it from the “rich“ (ya, that‘s likely)

Higher and higher taxes will insure that home schooling is the “most attractive” option for the average family who “wants to” provide a quality education in the future (home schoolers succeed on an average of $600 annually). Over bloated, centralized, top down “high costing bureaucracy” is what is draining much needed the money from government school system, and if you expect them to de-centralized it, think again – they are currently thinking about centralizing health care. “Centralization” is the air that Washington breaths. Its very hard for them to take their paws off of anything that they control…

Also, as the homosexual community tries to push it ethics into to public school system, and they will succeed because they are relentless,
if they loose today – they come back tomorrow – or if they have to, they will sneak their agenda into bills, like they recently did in California. This too will force more and more Christians, and traditional parents, to opt out of the current system, into the arms of homeschooling, especially now days with so many people networking in the churches, and having friends, who already do home school (and these friends are eager to help new families get started!) Home schooling will boon! We Christians call this old fashioned discipleship!

And, as far as it goes “within a few generations”, I’ am talking about 50 to70 years, maybe even 100 to 200 years from now (and if you keep up your unrepentant rebellion against your maker, I hate to say it, by then you’ll be in Hell)

Stop being so myopic and follow the trajectory of the patterns long term.

Rome didn’t collapse in a day, and Christianity was there to pick up the pieces when it did fall!

So it will be again and even more next time!

If I was you, I’d be alarmed!!!

A reprieve of your offenses against a Holy and Just God is available is to you, if you will only repent (turn from your sinful way of life) and:

Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way. When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him!

    Psalm 2:12

  9. onein6,

See my last entries at the Expelled post.

  10. […] Exodus: California Christian Groups Unite to Remove Children from Public Schoools – New laws mandate the positive potrayal of homosexuality in public schools Posted on February 11, 2008 by larrytemple I mentioned this in a comment on my post titled “If I were an Atheist – I’d be afraid of Home Schooling!  […]

  11. “We only disbelieve a particular unproven doctrine of origins.”

As usual for a creationist, it appears that you are confusing abiogenesis with evolution. Well, please read the latest speculation on abiogenesis in the February issue of Discover magazine.

“Unproven” in this context is a religious nonsense word. Real scientists never claim any theory is “proven”.

  12. genesis – theism
    abiogenesis – atheism
“doctrine of origins” – Get it??

“Unproven in this context is a religious nonsense word”

Why because you say so? Your statement is nonsense. That like saying “Unproven” in any context is a nonsense word…

“Real” as you define it (those who hold to your rigid dogma)

“scientists never claim any theory is “proven”

Then why are you so rigidly dogmatic about atheism? Why are you so rigidly dogmatic about Darwinism?

I have a hunch its because at this point in the game, it is the best option you have, even if the theory has flaws, this is probably because you never will or never can get yourself to accept the alternative, on any terms…

There are many atheists like this, just as religious as me.

The difference is I, like the Apostle Paul
have been forever touched by an encounter with the Living God. I am forever changed and “know” by “personal revelation” the Truth which has set me free.

Maybe If you humble yourself before the Lord Jesus Christ and repent of you sin – He will touch you in the same way.

  13. “Why are you so rigidly dogmatic about Darwinism?”

Because there is no scientific evidence that contradicts the Modern Theory of Evolution and there is an enormous body of evidence that does not contradict it.

“never can get yourself to accept the alternative”

    There is no scientific alternative.

“There are many atheists like this, just as religious as me.”

Yet another religious nonsense statement. The attempt to call atheists “religious” is really silly.

“Maybe If you humble yourself before the Lord Jesus Christ and repent of you sin – He will touch you in the same way.”

    Yet another religious nonsense statement.

  14. –“Unproven in this context is a religious nonsense word”

-“Why because you say so? Your statement is nonsense. That like saying “Unproven” in any context is a nonsense word…”

No, “this context” is quite different from “any context”.

“proven” and “unproven” make perfectly good sense in mathematics, geometry, logic and some scientific experiments.

But obviously a hypothesis of origins is speculation at this point and so “proven” or “unproven” do not make any sense. Of course such a hypothesis will be very difficult to “prove” and no scientist claims otherwise. So “unproven” is an obviously unnecessary derogatory religious adjective. And, of course, the word “doctrine” is similarly an erroneous religious noun used for derogatory purposes.

  15. “for the average family who “wants to” provide a quality education in the future (home schoolers succeed on an average of $600 annually)”

Unfortunately, the “average family” with children in the public schools here in Austin, Texas is a single Hispanic mother raising one or two children. Welfare has been eliminated, so spending $600 per month with an income of $0 per year does not seem to be a viable option. So having “middle income” people pay property taxes to support the public schooling of these children while the mother works to provide food and shelter seems like to only viable option to me.

  16. “So “unproven” is an obviously unnecessary derogatory religious adjective. And, of course, the word “doctrine” is similarly an erroneous religious noun used for derogatory purposes.”

Religious adjective? I beg to differ… (your beliefs are very much like someone who is religious, get it?)

    Think first don’t react…

I know many “average families” here in Chicagoland that make approx $30 – $35K / yr (where the cost of living is high) If they want a real education they have no choice but to home school – many moms can not go out and make enough (especially the more children you have) to make up the difference.

That is why our household chose to home school.

We like many others “lower middle class” average Midwestern (red county) families chose to make many sacrifices in order to educate our son (who is in college now) Beater car, no cable, shopping at Aldi, ect.

So our children will be the societal leaders of tomorrow in every area of culture (if we remain a free country that is)

Don’t you really understand what I am trying to say in this post?

Cant you clearly see the implications?

Economics aside, unless Government schools start producing real education, who will lead who in the future?

Do you know how to listen to the issues – or – do you only like to argue for the sake of argument?
