Government Schools: “Drug Him or Lose Him”

Here are a few excerpts from the book by Bruce Shortt titled “The Harsh Truth About Public Schools” published by the Chalcedon Foundation. These excerpts deal with the effects and over use of ritalin in the government schools and how teachers as agents of the state can accuse you of “child abuse and neglect” if you refuse to comply and drug your children.

“AS JAZZED AS ANY SPEED FREAK” (pg231)

There is ample scientific evidence to indicate that Ritalin is a very powerful drug with serious side effects. But what is it really like to be medicated with Ritalin? What is it like on the “inside”? Children, unfortunately are not articulate or experienced enough to give us much insight into this question. But Walter Kim, a professional writer, describes eloquently his experience with Ritalin after he had been diagnosed with adult “ADD.” According to Kim, the “Ritalinized” state of mind is far from benign — no matter how calm or in control the Ritalin user may seem to outside observers:

“I felt guilty each time I renewed my prescription, but like Ritalin’s other effects, it didn’t show. I felt guilty because the drug was so damned powerful — easily as euphoria inducing as any illegal substance I’d ever tried. In fact, its effects were better. Cleaner. Tighter. Plus, compared to street drugs, the stuff was cheap. For the same amount cokeheads pay for one night’s high, I could soar for a month, without fear of the police. Not that I didn’t feel paranoid anyhow. During the eighteen months I took the drug, I rehearsed countless times a scene in which a cop pulled me over for a traffic infraction, looked deep into my dilated pupils, then spotted the pill bottle on the seat beside me. “It’s a prescription, officer,” I’d say. And what could he do about it? Not a thing. There I am, as jazzed as any speed freak who’s just put his girlfriend in the hospital after an all-night quarrel in a motel room, and yet I’m untouchable, innocent, free to go.”

Are you still wondering why Ritalin is being abused as a street drug or why it is being widely used as a recreational drug by teenagers? Kim’s experience with Ritalin also showed him how Ritalin could be prescribed to so many children: “It’s no wonder, I thought, that parents and teachers love the stuff…. Forget how the little white pills make Johnny feel.., they make the adults looking after him feel great.”Kim ultimately took himself off of Ritalin. Children don’t have that option, even if they, like Kim, could understand what is being done to them.


WELL, NOW THAT YOU ASK, THERE ARE A FEW SIDE—EFFECTS (pg219)

Here are some of the side effects for Ritalin listed by the Physician~ Desk Reference: inability to fall asleep and stay asleep, nervousness, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight loss, abnormally fast heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness, headache, hives, jerking, pulse changes, skin rash, Tourette’s syndrome, and severe and multiple twitching and writhing movements. Users are also warned that “suppression of growth has been reported with the long term use of stimulants,” long-term abuse can lead to tolerance and mental dependence with varying degrees of abnormal behavior, and “Long term effects of Ritalin in children have not been well established.”

Critics of Ritalin are less circumspect about the risks so blandly described by the Physician~ Drug Reference. Dr. Peter Breggin, for example notes the following:

  • Ritalin can cause inattention, hyperactivity, and aggression – in other words, the symptoms of ADHD!
  • Ritalin can suppress a child’s growth (height and weight), but there are no studies of how this growth suppression might affect the child’s brain development. Moreover, there are studies that indicate that long-term use of Ritalin canresult in shrinkage of parts of the brain.
  • Ritalin can cause permanent, disfiguring tics and muscle spasms.
  • Ritalin can ofren make children anxious, sometimes causing them to act in ways that seem “crazy.
  • Ritalin can cause withdraxval symptoms when one or more doses are missed.

A 2001 study by researchers at the University of Buffalo reports that Ritalin may cause long-term changes in the brain similar to those produced by amphetamines and cocaine.’More specifically, Ritalin was found to activate certain genes linked to addiction known as cfos genes.” Moreover, these genes were activated “in a pattern similar to that seen among those who use cocaine and amphetamines, “199 which may provide the biological basis for the University of California study’s finding that Ritalin is a “gateway” drug.

DRUG HIM OR LOSE HIM (pg226)

As incredible as it may seem, school districts are beginning to threaten parents with the loss of their children if they don’t want to medicate them. Here are just two examples:

  • A 7 year-old boy’s parents were concerned about the side-effects he was suffering from Ritalin. After the parents spoke to the school administrators about their decision to take their son off the drug, the school administrators called Child Protective Services alleging child abuse. As a result, the parents were placed on a state-wide list of alleged child abusers and ensnared in a court battle to clear their names and keep their child.
  • In another case, a mother decided to take her 9 year-old son off of a drug cocktail that included Ritalin, Paxil, and Dexadrine because they caused him to hallucinate. This led to the school district officials calling the police and Child Protective Services in an effort to enforce their preference that the boy be drugged.

According to observers, government schools “are increasingly using accusations of child abuse and neglect” if parents resist drugging their children. David Lansner, a New York City lawyer who has seen cases similar to those described, reports, “The schools are now using child protective services to enforce their own desires and their own policies.” Similarly, Dr. Lawrence H. Diller has noted: “It is no longer simply an issue of which school or class a child will attend. Instead, some parents are being threatened with the possibility of losing custody of their children if they refuse to comply with suggested treatment for an alleged medical condition [ADHD]

One of the shocking aspects of these developments is that the government has traditionally respected parental decisions regarding medical treatment for their children unless the life of the child was in danger. In these cases, nothing of the sort is at stake. The government school officials in these instances simply believe that drugging the child is a better medical decision, and they obviously mean to have their way.

  1. Schools play games that many perents do not see. When a teacher started to pressure me to medicate my 6 year old child for what she felt were signs of ADD, she started sending home work that was graded with D’s and F’s for backwards letters and numbers. This was in the middle of first grade. Backwards letters and numbers are nomal for first graders. I questioned other parents and found out that my son was being graded on this when the other children were not. Parents that don’t know any better probally panic and buy into the whole disorder scam. As it turned out my son was gifted and dragging his feet on boring work. The public school knew he was gifted before I did. They didn’t want to have to deal with it. I removed him from that school and he is now in a Montessori school and doing very well. He is two and three grade levels ahead in his subjects. Public schools do not get extra money for gifted and they are purposely mislabeling and getting payed to do it!
